JASON ALLEN - ROADS FROM RUIN (2017)
During the first six months of 2017, Lady Inspiration found me with time on my hands. I wrote a batch of 30 new musical ideas, along with reams of lyrics.

I picked a dozen of these new songs and spent the summer months recording, arranging and mixing. Working in daylight made a welcome change.

My previous effort (Fieldwork, 2015) was made using only acoustic guitars. This time around I decided to concentrate on electric guitars.

Completed in October 2017, the resultant album is called Roads From Ruin.

Jason Allen:
Vocals, harmony vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar,
bass guitar, drums, cajon, percussion, ebow, lap steel, keyboards,
programming, harmonica, lyrics.

All songs written, performed, produced and mixed by Jason Allen.
Written January to June 2017. Recorded July to October 2017.

Thank you to friends and family near and far. We will always be young.

GHOST ON MY TRAIL

I hope what was said was soon forgot
I know it ain't a lot
But it was everything I'm not

Came in from the cold with gold in my hands
It was coloured like the sand
I gave it back to the land - it wasn't mine

What the hell's been going wrong?
From where I stand it feels like this belongs
I can't tell what's going on, no, no

Hit the road that took me out of ruin
Distracted by the view
Everybody knew that

One too many times it led me on
Sold for a song
When there was nothing going on, no, no, no

What the hell's been going wrong?
From where I stand it feels like this belongs
I never knew the rules would change
Guess nothing ever stays the same except
The ghost on my trail, on my trail

One thing left to do before I go
I'm gonna tell you what I know
There's nothing but a ghost on my trail

What the hell's been going wrong?
From where I stand it feels like this belongs
I never knew the rules would change
Guess nothing ever stays the same except
The ghost on my trail, on my trail

There's nothing but a ghost on my trail

SOUTH ON 37

Is that all you got 'cos I got less?
We're good together I must confess
This ain't no place for dressing to impress
Now we know how it feels
It's so good to be blessed

So let go, we'll let go

Here we go then let's get out of this place
We've been here too long I can see it in your face
Now we know we've gotta move on
This road's gonna carry us on

But we won't know where that is until we go
We let go

We're heading south on 37 again
We got together like we first met
We needed time to find the time to breathe
Now we know how it feels
It's so good to be free

So let's go - you and me let's go
We've got our minds on somewhere new
I'll go there with you

Is that all they got 'cos we got more?
We took the time to discover what we're searching for
With smiles on our faces and sun on our backs
Now we know where we are
It's so good to be back

So let's go, we'll let go
We've lost our minds in somewhere new
I've been there with you

We're heading south on 37 again

ICEBERGS & LIFEBOATS

She's sweetness and trouble, intrigue and danger
Tied to the rails of her life roller coaster

She's right by your side then she's out of your life
Con trails in your blue sky
She's cats eyes on a night drive

Bitter-sweet aftertaste, scent on the breeze
A trap door in a dark maze
Temptation and tease

She's there when she needs you
Like icebergs and lifeboats

He pretends to be interested, protecting his investment
Listens to no-one, expects to be noticed

He's driven by ego, confidently anxious
A leader unfollowed - misguided and jealous

They go together like icebergs and lifeboats
She's always there - when he needs her, she's elsewhere
He's always there - when she needs him, he won't care
They're always there
When they're needed
She's never there, he never cares

She's there when she needs him
Like icebergs and lifeboats
He's there when he needs her
With fake smiles and false hope
They go together
Like icebergs and lifeboats

She's sweetness and trouble
Iceberg and lifeboat

ENTWINED

I know I'm not coming back
Suppose you'd better deal with that fact
Years and miles between us now
But the memories linger on somehow
Trapped in time, entwined

If the thought of me
Becomes a thought of yours
From time to time
These former lives entwined

I walk a long-deserted place
Guided by the spirits that we raised
They're ghosts
Ever onwards, never back
Facing forwards on the track
In hope I go, solo

If the thought of me
Becomes a thought of yours
From place to place
These former lives entwined

We know we're not coming back
Suppose we'd better deal with that fact
Hills and vales between us now
But the memories still remain somehow
Stopped in time, entwined

If the thought of us
Becomes a thought of yours
Just let it slide
These former lives untied

I'm not a million miles away
But I'm far enough to claim this place as mine
In time, entwined

Standing by a wall, October 2017.

DRINK & OVERTIME

Relegated to the midweek graveyard shift
He knows nothing good will come of it
'Cos the doubts will always find him
So he gets healthy or he dies trying
He knows he could've used some luck
But the sum of his parts wasn't good enough

Kissing strangers in the street
Disembodied voices in silent stairwells
Muttering farewells

Single mum dragging on Number Ones
Whilst arguing with randoms
On the comments bit of a YouTube clip
Her half-past-six will soon arrive
He'll come and leave in record time

Missing strangers never meet
Disconnected choices in backstreet wine bars
Muttering farewells

His face was shaped by drink and overtime
Peering through the window
Of a downtown bus bound for the pound
He knows he could've used some love
But the sum of his fortune wasn't big enough

Kissing strangers in the street
Disembodied voices in silent stairwells
Muttering farewells

Faces shaped by drink and overtime
Faces shaped by drink and overtime
Drink and overtime, drink and overtime
Drinking all the time, drinking all the time

FORWARDS TO THE FUTURE

Farewell hopeless dreamer
I couldn't find your light
Your curtains always closing
Your days concealed by night

I have found another reason
In the endless march of time
Forwards to the future
That dream was never mine

Farewell Miss Indecisive
You didn't hear my call
Riding on your high horse
Be careful not to fall

Control is yours now alone
Do with it as you please
Remember, those who helped you
Can bring you to your knees

Farewell hopeless dreamer
I failed to find the fight
Horizons make the distance
That keeps me out of sight

I have found a better reason
In this ever-changing tide
Forwards to the future
The past ran out of time

The passed was never mine

Still shot from the Ghost On My Trail video, October 2017.

WANTING MORE

Turning heads for one last look
A fleeting glimpse of a closing book
Caught the last of everything
Took the road that future brings

Could've been a passing face
Could've been the way that love
Just left us wanting more

Never was a one for staying fast
Bound for trails beneath the last
Somewhere in the dark of night
I found the love and lost the fight

Could've been a passing phase
Could've been the way that love
Just left us wanting more

I hope you're feeling better now
We should've stayed in touch somehow
I'll see you when they call our names
For now this isolation remains

Could've been a passing phase
Could've been the weight of love
That pinned us to the floor
Could've been the wait for love
That left us wanting more

Message to a former lover
Let me know you got this, let me know you know this

Message to a former lover
Let me know you got this, let me know you care
Tell me that you got this, let me know you're there
Tell me that you got this, tell me that you care

LONDON NEVER CALLED

I recall you never called me
Find a fault that won't appal me
Pass the blame when we're both guilty
Raise the stakes and then disappoint me

Gratitude? Check
Attitude wrecked the boat
But I couldn't turn around if I wanted to

I can't stop I've come too far out
It's too late to turn it all 'round
So I keep pushing, hold my course
It's hope that still drives me on

And I couldn't turn around if I wanted to
No I couldn't turn around if I wanted to
This is what I do now

London never called
London never called
London never called

Ignore the critics, negative cynics
I'm the one that has to do this
Tread the path, individual path
Forsake the cage of normality

That's not for me, I'm doing no harm
That's not for me, I raise no alarms
This is what I do now

Lend an ear, I'm speaking truth
I'd say I'm lost, don't know what to do
It's been so long since I last owned a map
Now all I can do is find that track
And it's no-one else's fault, I'm on my own

Heading off into the sunset, June 2017.

ONLY STARS

We'll drive this car 'til we can't turn back
'Til there's nowhere left for us to track
Those city lights burned half as bright
For half as long and twice the price

Demons in the trunk tied to the wheel
Sinking the ride in the river deep, then we kneel
Praying for peace and release
From whatever it was we made

Only stars ever saw this, out in the dark we ignored it
Spoke the last we ever did
The trails ran out when love ended

Last of the luggage on the road
The gas ran out some time ago
Secrets blowing in the wind
But we can't rewind the past back in

Only stars ever saw this, out in the dark we ignored it
In wilderness we call to arms
Still silent, but we're hoping for alarms

Most of this baggage we'll unload
Our luck ran out three towns ago
Memories drifting in the dust
But we can't deny this wanderlust

Only stars ever saw this, out in the dark we ignored it
Spoke the last we ever did
The trails ran out when love ended

Only stars ever saw this, out in the dark we ignored it
In wilderness we call to arms
Still silent, but we're hoping for alarms

Now we're only stars, only stars

HOW IT WORKS

Better keep a cool head, don't be fooled
'Cos The Man In Black won't bring you the gold
You should've kept your mouth shut but you called for help
Ain't nobody gonna save you, better do it yourself

'Cos your time's not coming back
Better know your time's not coming back
It disappears - that's how it works

They're gonna get their own back and make you pay
Did you need it anyway, if it goes to waste?
So you settled for the cheap thrill, the undersell
But it made your heart break
Talk it through, deal with it yourself

'Cos your time's not coming back
Better know your time's not coming back
It disappears - that's how it works

So did you catch a brief glimpse?
When you dropped your guard
When you bolted for the front door
And made it out to the yard
You could've made a clean start but you stalled the car
Now you're heading for the hills
With an empty hand and not much more, no, no

One too many white lies but they called you out
Now you're not making sense, no, no, no

'Cos your time's not coming back
Better know your time's not coming back
It disappears - that's how it works

So you could've kept a cool head and helped yourself
If you're gonna get your own back
You'd better make it hell
'Cos you should've kept a cool head

Handwritten lyrics, July 2017.

NEVER BE THE SAME

It should've been part of the plans, if they'd been kept
Maps drawn in the shifting sands
Where the breeze always takes effect
Bogged down in history - unintentional man of mystery
Still there for all to see, hidden in the dark with anxiety

Born to get a job but it wouldn't pay
Selling off the soul for a rainy day
Piece by piecemeal wasting away
For no particular sake or place
Don't be fooled, it'll change again
There's a riot going on down Memory Lane

The ghosts are in the street tonight
Calling out beneath the lights
Hear them shout familiar names
But it'll never be the same, never be the same again
No, it'll never be the same, never be the same again

It won't help to talk it through
'Cos no-one ever grew out of awkward phases
Still living in the past, never at the races
What's a man to do?

Supposed to leave, but never left
Tripped up on the backward step
Made a run and made a mess
Where to now?
Feel free to guess

The ghosts are in the street again
Calling out beneath the rain
Hear them shout familiar names
But it'll never be the same, never be the same again
No, it'll never be the same, never be the same again

You could've been King of the World, but you got caught
With both hands 'round the neck of time
And you still say it's not your fault

WE WILL ALWAYS BE YOUNG

Love
Let's tell them all we broke up
Put a screen of smoke up
Shake them off our trail

Just you and me alone
In the secret place
Forever in that summer day
Sleeping in the haze

We will always be young
Both of us loaded with soul
It all comes down to moments
Awake and here we are
So what do we do?

You tell me

Time and place will call us
A signal through the air
Suppose I really need you
Guess I'm already there

And so are you

We leap then we look
That's what we do
We will always be young
That's what we do

We will always be young
That's what we do
We will always be young
That's what we do

We leap then we look
Always be young
